This is a little scary. I'm being dragged, kicking and screaming all the way, into the 21st century. But it's fun too: my first blog. I hope you enjoy the entries!
I thought you might enjoy a photo to jazz things up a bit. This is a picture of me taken with a Canadian Mounty in Vancouver at the Olympics this year! I realize I was supposed to be excited by the athletes, but meeting the Mounties was absolutely fabulous!
I think this is the first time that I've met a UNE classmate and have a face to attach to a name! So thanks for the picture! Meeting the Canadian Mounty seems like it would have been a really exciting experience. Were you at the Olympics because you live nearby, or did you go to see a certain event or person, etc.? Just curious why you went and what you thought of it! Elisha Awad
ReplyDeleteElisha! Hi! You responded to my blog! My daughter says this is called "posting". How exciting! To answer your questions: I live in Connecticut, so we were very far from Vancouver. We went (my friend and I) to see the Olympics. It was like the stars aligned, we got cheap plane tickets, a free hotel room, and my February vacation was the first week of the Olympics. We saw women's hockey and men and womens curling. The hardest thing was getting the event tickets - most were incredibly expensive. Vancouver is a beautiful city - absolutely gorgeous - I would go back anytime! The Olympics were really fun - seeing the torch and the Olympic symbol! And we found the mittens in our size! I'll try to put more pictures on my site.
ReplyDeleteNot being a person who follows many sports (just tennis), I think I would be equally excited to meet a Mounty. That is very cool! What did you think of the games? Did you just visit Vancouver, or were you able to travel to other parts of Canada? WIll you be follwong the summer Olympics as well?
ReplyDeleteHi Matthew, thank you for posting a comment! I think this whole blogging experience is really rather fun. The Olympic experience was very cool, because I've followed the Olympics avidly every since I can remember. Here's one of my best stories. We flew to Vancouver early in the morning and with the time change working in our favor got to Vancouver at 10:30 a.m. By one o'clock we had checked into our hotel, left our luggage, found our way to the skytrain and to our first venue: the Thunderbird hockey arena on the University of BC campus. We were there to see women's hockey. The U.S. creamed Russia 10-0. The star scorer was Jenny Potter, formerly Schmidgall. She has played in every Olympics since 1998, and she comes from Edina, MN, my old home. I created and ran the 4th of July Parade in Edina and Jenny Schmidgall was my first Grand Marshall! She was awesome!
ReplyDeleteWe just were in Vancouver but I have seen most of Canadia from Montreal to the Canadian Rockies. What a beautiful place Vancouver is! I was thrilled to see the totem poles! I used to teach at Heart of the Earth, a school for Native American youth, in Minnesota. I love Native American culture, so finding the totem poles was wonderful. Vancouver sits between the mountains and the sea and no matter where you are in the city you are surrounded by spectacular views.
Mary Beth- your Blog is amazing, I admire all that you've done so far with it! And how great it is to see your face after all our conversations lol. Isn't it funny how you are "in class" with so many students yet we have no idea what the others look like?!
ReplyDeleteHi Mary Beth,
ReplyDeleteKeep up the good conversation with members. Very nice blog. Pat
